Francis Onyeka could return for Elversberg against RB Leipzig
Francis Onyeka could make his return to the SV Elversberg squad for Saturday’s Bundesliga clash against RB Leipzig after recovering from a foot ligament injury.
The 19-year-old attacking midfielder has resumed training with his teammates, raising hopes of an earlier comeback than initially anticipated. Earlier reports had suggested that Onyeka could face several weeks on the sidelines, potentially ruling him out of Elversberg’s upcoming fixtures against Leipzig and Mainz 05.
However, his return to team training has improved his chances of being available this weekend, although his exact fitness level remains unclear.
Head coach Vincent Wagner remained tight-lipped about Onyeka’s availability, responding “Maybe” when asked whether the teenager and teammate Cole Campbell would be fit for the weekend. Wagner had earlier hinted that some injured players could provide positive surprises.
Onyeka’s return to training is an encouraging sign after he missed Elversberg’s recent matches against Union Berlin and FC Augsburg. Before the injury, he had established himself as an important attacking option, registering an assist in three starts.
However, his participation in the Leipzig match remains uncertain. Elversberg will assess his condition before making a final decision, with the coaching staff keen to avoid rushing him back prematurely.
A place in the matchday squad is now a possibility, but whether Onyeka is ready to feature will become clearer closer to kick-off on Saturday.
