Arda Guler credited with Real Madrid’s disputed goal against Leipzig

UEFA has confirmed that Arda Guler scored Real Madrid’s second goal in their Champions League match against Leipzig at Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, 21 October 2026.

The goal sparked debate after the ball appeared to be redirected by both Kylian Mbappe and Guler before crossing the line in the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid doubled their lead in the 52nd minute when Jude Bellingham delivered a cross towards Mbappe. The France forward headed the ball towards goal, but Guler made the final touch on the line as it went into the net.

That led to disagreement among supporters and media outlets over whether the goal should be awarded to Mbappe or Guler.

UEFA settled the issue on its official website, listing the scorer as Guler. It also published an image showing the Turkish midfielder touching the ball before it had completely crossed the line.

The goal was Guler’s first in this season’s Champions League and his third in the competition overall. His previous two goals came in a brace against Bayern Munich last season.

Real Madrid hosted Leipzig in the third round of the league phase at Santiago Bernabeu.
