Albert Sambi Lokonga returns to full training ahead of Hamburg’s Paderborn clash
Albert Sambi Lokonga is closing in on a return to action for Hamburger SV after recovering from muscular problems and resuming full training ahead of Saturday’s Bundesliga away fixture against SC Paderborn 07.
The 26-year-old midfielder has made encouraging progress this week after missing Hamburg’s 1-0 victory over VfB Stuttgart. According to BILD, Lokonga is now available for selection, provided he suffers no further setbacks.
Lokonga had initially been limited to a modified training programme at the start of the week as Hamburg carefully managed his workload. However, his return to full training has strengthened head coach Merlin Polzin’s midfield options ahead of the weekend encounter.
Despite the positive development, Lokonga’s availability does not necessarily guarantee an immediate return to the starting lineup. The midfield trio of Bilal Nadir, Miro Muheim and Martin Adeline impressed during the victory over Stuttgart, potentially giving Polzin a reason to maintain his selection.
Albert Grønbæk is also pushing for a starting role after returning from injury and making an appearance off the bench against Stuttgart. His availability adds further competition for places in Hamburg’s midfield.
Lokonga, who serves as the club’s vice-captain, remains an important figure in the squad. His return would provide additional experience and stability as Hamburg prepare for a challenging away fixture.
HSV travel to face Paderborn on Saturday, October 24, with kick-off scheduled for 15:30 local time. Polzin must now decide whether to restore Lokonga to the starting eleven or ease him back into action from the bench.
