African champions Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the signing of 19-year-old Amajita captain Lazola Maku.
The midfielder joins the Betway Premiership leaders as a free agent after leaving Siwelele FC when his contract expired. Sundowns made the announcement on Tuesday morning, confirming a move that had been widely anticipated following the player’s recent international involvement.
Maku spent several weeks on trial with clubs in Europe after departing Siwelele FC, but returned to South Africa to represent the national under-20 side at the COSAFA U20 Championship in Mozambique last month.
He played a key role as Amajita successfully defended their COSAFA U20 title, with South Africa defeating hosts Mozambique 2-1 in the final. Maku captained the team during the tournament and was the most experienced member of the squad.
His move to the Chloorkop-based club follows earlier links with Sundowns. The African champions have now secured his services after he became available without a transfer fee.
Maku made five first-team appearances for Siwelele FC. He was also part of the club during its rebrand from SuperSport United.
The youngster’s departure from Siwelele had prompted uncertainty over his next destination, particularly after his European trials. His return for Amajita’s title defence preceded the official confirmation of his move to Sundowns.
