Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is considering moving Frenkie de Jong into defence for Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain, with injuries limiting his options at the back.
Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde have been ruled out after Barcelona’s victory over Sevilla, while Gerard Martin is doubtful after reporting discomfort in his foot.
De Jong has recently returned from injury and could be asked to fill in despite normally playing in midfield. Flick is also assessing Alex Campos as he decides on his defensive line-up for the trip to Paris.
“Frenkie de Jong can play, and Alex Campos is also with us. I am certain everything will go well,” Flick told reporters.
He accepted that Barcelona were facing a difficult period but said the squad had to deal with the situation.
“Perhaps we are not going through the best moment, but we have to accept that,” said Flick.
Barcelona face the European champions at the Parc des Princes, with the game providing a demanding test against one of the leading sides in Europe.
Flick wants his players to approach the match with confidence, pointing to their recent run of form.
“I think tomorrow’s game is a good test for us. I want our team to play with confidence, as a side that has won its last 11 matches does,” he said.
The Barcelona coach described Paris Saint-Germain as “the best team in the world over the last two years”, underlining the scale of the challenge awaiting his side.
However, Flick believes Barcelona must retain their belief despite the defensive problems and the quality of the opposition. The German is hoping his team can cope with the absences at the back and maintain their confidence in a crucial Champions League encounter.
