Mamelodi Sundowns must overcome Wiliete SC at home to reach the CAF Champions League group stages after being held to a goalless draw in the first leg of their second preliminary round tie in Angola.
The Brazilians had chances at the Estadio Nacional de Tundavala in Lubango but were unable to break through, leaving the contest evenly balanced before Friday’s return match in Tshwane.
The game began 30 minutes late because of adverse weather and pitch conditions. Once play started, Sundowns quickly put the hosts under pressure.
Brayan Leon came close to scoring within the opening five minutes after being played through by Nuno Santos. His attempt appeared destined for the net, but a Wiliete defender cleared the ball off the line.
Teboho Mokoena then tested Wiliete goalkeeper Beny with a long-range free-kick, while Tashreeq Matthews also looked dangerous as the visitors sought to establish control.
Sundowns were forced into a change before half-time when Mokoena was unable to continue after a heavy challenge. Bathusi Aubaas came on in his place.
The South African side had already been without captain Ronwen Williams and Aubrey Modiba, who missed the match with minor injuries. Ricardo Goss started in goal, with Fawaaz Basadien replacing Modiba at left-back.
Wiliete improved after the interval and created opportunities of their own, requiring Goss to make several important saves. One of the goalkeeper’s key interventions came when he denied Agostinho Cristovao Paciencia Mabululu from close range.
Matthews nearly gave Sundowns the breakthrough in the 66th minute after finding space inside the penalty area, but Beny reacted quickly to keep out his effort.
The visitors continued to search for a late winner, with substitute Iqraam Rayners given another promising opening. He could not keep his attempt on target, however, and Wiliete held on for a valuable draw.
Sundowns were given a bye through the first preliminary round and will now have home advantage in the second leg as they attempt to finish the tie and secure progress towards the Champions League group stages.
