Safa elects three vice-presidents as Doc Khumalo takes technical committee role

Dr Khumalo has been appointed deputy to South African Football Association technical committee chairperson Jack Maluleke, while Linda Zwane, Anastasia “Natasha” Tsichlas and Tankiso Modipa have been elected as Safa’s three vice-presidents.

The appointments were confirmed at the conclusion of the association’s three-day national executive committee (NEC) meeting in Sandton on Sunday.

Zwane and Tsichlas will serve second terms as vice-presidents, while Modipa takes up the position for the first time. He replaces Bennett Bailey, the chairperson of the Safa Cape Town region.

Safa president Danny Jordaan said the process used to elect the vice-presidents was transparent, although he declined to identify the candidates who had challenged the successful trio. Zwane, Tsichlas and Modipa have consistently supported Jordaan.

“We determined the vice-presidents by an open ballot, which was observed by all of the members. The election showed the transparency and the commitment of Safa to deal with these matters in an open, transparent way,” the 75-year-old Jordaan said at a press conference at the NH hotel on Sunday evening.

Jordaan won a fourth term as Safa president after defeating AmaZulu owner Sandile Zungu at last month’s elective congress in Midrand.

He said the newly elected vice-presidents would now work with Safa chief executive officer Lydia Monyepao to establish the foundations of the association’s Vision 2030 plan.

“The next step is for the vice-presidents to come together with the CEO to put together Vision 2030. In the elements of Vision 2030, it’s about schools, football development and the excellence of our various national teams,” Jordaan said.

Modipa is also chairperson of the Football Transformation Forum, a lobby group which supported Jordaan during the recent elections. Bailey, who has been replaced as a vice-president, supported Zungu.

Criminal case withdrawn

Safa head of communication Mninawa Ntloko said Northern Cape NEC member Lebohang Riet had withdrawn a criminal case against Monyepao.

Riet is also chairperson of Force For Change, a lobby group which backed Zungu before the election.

Two days before last month’s vote, Riet told Sowetan that he had opened a case against Monyepao over the distribution of an election information pack containing amended statutes which, he said, had not been agreed.

Riet was unavailable for comment on Sunday because he had left the venue before the press conference.
