Robinho Junior makes Serie A debut as Genoa suffer defeat by Roma

Robinho Junior, the son of former Brazil international Robinho, made his first appearance in Serie A when Genoa were beaten 2-0 by Roma.

The 18-year-old came on as a late substitute at the Stadio Olimpico, beginning his career in Italy’s top flight more than a decade after his father made his own Serie A debut with AC Milan.

Robinho Junior joined Genoa on the final day of the transfer window on loan. The agreement includes an option for the club to sign him permanently for about 8m euros at the end of the season.

His promotion to the senior squad followed an impressive spell with Santos’ youth team. He scored three goals and provided one assist in three appearances for the under-20 side before moving into contention for first-team football in Europe.

The teenager had previously been named among Genoa’s substitutes for their 2-1 victory over Fiorentina, but was not used. His opportunity arrived against Roma, when he was introduced during the closing stages.

The appearance means Robinho Junior has followed an early step taken by his father, who played for several prominent European clubs during his career, including AC Milan, Manchester City and Real Madrid.

Robinho senior made his first Serie A appearance for AC Milan on 11 September 2010, in a 2-0 defeat by Cesena. He had joined the Italian club from Manchester City.

The former forward ended his playing career with Santos in October 2020 and is now 42. His son began his development in Santos’ academy before embarking on his own route into European football.

Robinho Junior’s move to Genoa gives him the opportunity to establish a career separate from the reputation created by his father, who became one of Brazil’s most recognisable footballers during his time in Europe and at international level.
