Victor Boniface eyes bigger role as Bayer Leverkusen face Freiburg

Victor Boniface could become increasingly important for Bayer Leverkusen in the coming weeks as injuries to Martin Terrier and Christian Kofane leave coach Carles Martinez with fewer attacking options.

The Nigerian striker has struggled to secure regular playing time this season, partly because of concerns over his fitness. However, the latest setbacks in Leverkusen’s forward line could create an opportunity for the 25-year-old to revive his campaign.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Bundesliga home match against SC Freiburg, Martinez explained that he is working closely with Boniface to improve his physical intensity and help him meet the demands of the team.

“We are working and talking with Boni,” the coach said, explaining that he wants to support the striker while pushing him to make further progress.

Martínez stressed that earning a place in the starting lineup depends on consistently delivering the required intensity, both during training and in matches.

“What we want is eleven players with maximum intensity,” he emphasised.

The Spaniard added that Boniface could earn opportunities as a substitute or even start if he demonstrates the necessary standards. However, he made clear that the same expectations apply to every member of the squad.

Patrik Schick remains Leverkusen’s leading option at centre-forward, but the injuries to Kofane and Terrier have increased the importance of having reliable alternatives. Kofane is expected to miss several weeks with a thigh injury, while Terrier is also a doubt for the Freiburg encounter.

Leverkusen host Freiburg on Sunday, October 18, with Boniface hoping to use the reduced competition in attack to earn more minutes and establish himself as a more regular contributor.
