The MTN8 final provided the weekend’s main football story as Orlando Pirates faced Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening.
The meeting between two of South Africa’s leading teams delivered an absorbing contest, with both sides competing fully until the final whistle. Sundowns eventually claimed the season’s first domestic cup after securing a 2-0 victory.
For Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, the match offered an opportunity to defend the trophy and create further history for the club. Pirates were aiming to become the first team to win the MTN8 five times in succession, while also matching Kaizer Chiefs’ record of 15 victories in the season-opening competition.
Sundowns manager Miguel Cardoso was pursuing a significant milestone of his own. After taking charge of the Chloorkop-based side two years ago, he was seeking his first domestic trophy with the club.
Sundowns take control
The opening goal came after Pirates failed to clear a free-kick delivered into their penalty area.
New signing Thabang Matuludi flicked the ball through Lebon Seema’s legs, creating an opportunity for Teboho Mokoena inside the six-metre box. The Bafana Bafana central midfielder kept his composure when faced by Sipho Chaine and finished the chance to put the Brazilians ahead.
Pirates had opportunities to respond but were unable to convert them. Their clearest opening came from the penalty spot, where Ghampani Lungu saw his effort saved by Ronwen Williams.
Sundowns were awarded a penalty of their own later in the referee’s optional time. Iqraam Rayners took responsibility and scored, extending the lead to 2-0.
That second goal settled the final and ensured Sundowns lifted the MTN8.
