Rayan Ait-Nouri’s Manchester City struggle deepens after Algeria setback

Rayan Ait-Nouri was left out of Manchester City’s squad for Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at Liverpool, his latest setback after being sent home from the Algeria camp. The left-back has yet to play a minute in the Premier League this season.

The 24-year-old was also omitted from the squad for the Manchester derby against Manchester United. Manchester City have not issued an official explanation for either decision, so the absences cannot be confirmed as disciplinary action.

From a sporting perspective, however, Ait-Nouri is currently outside Enzo Maresca’s preferred options. Since the start of the campaign, the Algeria international has played only 105 minutes across two matches.

He came on for the final 15 minutes against Porto in the Champions League and supplied one assist. He then started the League Cup encounter with Norwich, setting up two more goals.

Those three assists have not yet translated into a Premier League opportunity. Manchester City have won their opening six league matches, and the strength of the competition within a winning side has limited the chances for Maresca to change his starting XI.

Ait-Nouri joined Manchester City from Wolverhampton to take the next step in his career, but he now faces the task of convincing Maresca during training while waiting for another opportunity. The longer his absence from competitive action continues, the greater the issue of match sharpness becomes.

Algeria situation adds to pressure

The club situation comes at a particularly difficult time for Ait-Nouri internationally. Frustrated at not appearing against Zambia, he showed his displeasure while on the substitutes’ bench before leaving the Algeria camp.

Brahim Hemdani subsequently decided to leave him out of the squads for the matches against Burundi and Niger. His return to the Algeria team is not thought to be impossible, but it would now require an approach towards the coaching staff as well as an improvement in his club form.

The lack of regular football had already caused frustration around the left-back, and he now finds himself caught in a difficult cycle. Algeria could have provided him with the minutes needed to regain rhythm and confidence, but returning to the national team will first depend on him playing regularly for Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Jaouen Hadjam is strengthening his position at left-back and has become an increasingly credible option for Hemdani. The longer Ait-Nouri remains out of favour at both club and international level, the more difficult it will be for him to reclaim his place.

Should that situation continue, a move away in January could become almost unavoidable as he looks to restart his career, both at club level and with Algeria.
