Mamelodi Sundowns winger Siyanda Ndlovu says the criticism surrounding his move to the Tshwane club gave him extra motivation to establish himself in a squad packed with high-quality players.
Ndlovu helped Sundowns win the MTN8 on Saturday, when the continental champions defeated Orlando Pirates 2-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium. The victory secured the second trophy of the season for Sundowns and for their new signing.
The result also came against the club Ndlovu had been expected to join. His move to Orlando Pirates in July was almost completed before a late change of direction saw him sign for Sundowns at Chloorkop.
Many questioned whether the speedy winger would receive regular opportunities at Sundowns, given the strength and depth of the squad. Ndlovu, however, said those doubts encouraged him to work harder rather than undermine his confidence.
“Talks like that motivated me a lot [doubts surrounding his chances of playing] that at Sundowns I would be playing with players of a high quality, so I would have to pull up my socks to stake a claim for my position,” Ndlovu told the media after the match.
He also credited his previous experience under coach Manqoba Mngqithi with helping him settle quickly at Sundowns.
“I think adjusting at Sundowns was so easy for me because the football we played at Arrows under coach Manqoba [Mngqithi] is almost the same as Sundowns’ style of play. So, it made things easier for me to adjust.”
The MTN8 triumph continued a strong start to the season for Sundowns and Ndlovu, who now turn their attention to the Premiership.
Their next fixture is away to Richards Bay FC, who are struggling and seeking a change in fortunes. Sundowns travel to Durban for the match on Tuesday, 13 October 2026.
The game will be played at the Princess Magogo Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 19:30 SAST.
