Al Ahli have been told Brazilian defender Roger Ibanez can play a limited part in their AFC Champions League Elite match against Al Wasl on Monday.
Al Ahli travel to the United Arab Emirates to face Al Wasl in their second match of the competition, with the club’s medical department approving Ibanez’s involvement for part of the game.
The medical team has informed the coaching staff that the defender is available, but has advised against selecting him for the full match. The recommendation is intended to prevent fatigue before Al Ahli’s next Saudi Pro League fixture against Al Nassr.
The decision over whether Ibanez starts or begins on the bench will be made by head coach Marino Pusic.
Ibanez was not included in Al Ahli’s squad for Friday’s 4-0 victory over Al Fateh because he had not yet reached full fitness. His absence followed a recent injury to his left leg during the match against South African side Mamelodi Sundowns in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
His potential return provides Al Ahli with a defensive option for their second AFC Champions League Elite fixture, although the club’s medical advice means his playing time is expected to be managed.
Al Ahli will also be without goalkeeper Edouard Mendy for the meeting with Al Wasl. The Senegal international is expected to recover in time to face Al Nassr in the league next week.
Al Ahli began their AFC Champions League Elite campaign with a 1-1 draw against Pakhtakor. Al Wasl lost their opening match 2-1 to Saudi side Al Qadsiah.
