Manchester City victory over Liverpool leaves Premier League facing uncertainty

Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield has intensified questions over the Premier League season, with the club’s future still hanging on the outcome of its appeal against more than 100 financial charges.

City endured a hostile reception on Sunday in their first match since an independent commission found them guilty of widespread financial impropriety. Their victory, secured by goals from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki, maintained their perfect run of six consecutive wins.

Enzo Maresca’s side are six points clear at the top of the table and have now won away at both of their biggest rivals, following last month’s victory over Manchester United.

However, that advantage could ultimately count for nothing. No punishment has yet been announced, but City face the prospect of a substantial points deduction if their appeal fails. The possible sanctions include relegation or expulsion from the English top flight.

There is also a risk that the three Premier League titles City won between 2009 and 2018, the period covered by the charges, could be removed.

The unresolved case has created uncertainty across the division, with the legal process potentially continuing for months and leaving questions over the meaning of City’s results and their effect on other clubs.

“This is not good for the Premier League right now. That’s what I’ve just recognised today,” former Manchester United captain and pundit Gary Neville told Sky Sports.

“This is really bad for the Premier League and it’s going to continue for a few months.”

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola said the situation was harmful to everyone, describing it as “not good for anyone”.

Liverpool’s defeat leaves them ninth in the table, nine points behind City. Although they may not prove strong enough to challenge for the title, the points dropped at Anfield could prove significant in the race for Champions League qualification.

Any punishment imposed on City could also affect the fight against relegation.

“That today, what does it mean going forward?” former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports.

“This has to be done before the end of the season. There’s no way this can carry on to the end of the season because we’re all getting kidded.”

Liverpool have particular reason to resent City’s alleged wrongdoing, having finished runners-up to them three times in the past 12 years. Rival clubs believe the illegal spending during the 2009-2018 period helped establish the foundations for City’s continued dominance.

City spent a record £460 million in one transfer window only a few months ago and have already seen an immediate return.

Liverpool, missing Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo through injury, struggled to create chances. Iraola handed 21-year-old Lewis Koumas his Premier League debut in attack.

Maresca was able to introduce Jeremy Doku early in the second half, and the winger changed the match. He helped create City’s opening and third goals, with his own outstanding finish into the top corner coming between Haaland’s strike and Cherki’s effort.

Doku also played a part in Ryan Gravenberch receiving a second yellow card, after which Liverpool were unable to recover.

City’s depth has been central to their rise since the Abu Dhabi-backed takeover in 2008. But while Anfield’s chants, banners, flags and scarves accused them of cheating their way to the top, the wider league remains caught in uncertainty as it waits for an eight-year-old case to reach its conclusion.
