Al Masry held by Al Qanah as winless run extends to four matches

Al Masry’s winless run reached four matches after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Al Qanah in the sixth round of the Egyptian Premier League at New Suez Stadium.

The result moved Al Masry to seven points and 12th place, while Al Qanah rose to the same total and sit seventh on goal difference.

Hazem Abu Senna opened the scoring for Al Qanah before Salah Mohsen equalised from the penalty spot for Al Masry.

The draw extends a difficult spell for Al Masry, who have now failed to win in four successive matches after suffering three consecutive defeats followed by a draw. Their last run of four matches without a victory came in the season before last, when they recorded two defeats and two draws.

Al Masry started with an attacking trio of Abd El Rahim Dghamoum, Abdallah El Zayani and Monzer Tameen.

Al Qanah made the brighter start and thought they had taken the lead in the 12th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

They did go ahead 10 minutes later when Abu Senna followed up after goalkeeper Mahmoud Hamdy had saved a shot from Molaye Waye to make it 1-0.

Al Qanah kept their advantage until half-time despite Al Masry’s attempts to restore parity.

The visitors came close to an equaliser in the 66th minute, but Ali Soliman somehow missed from close range.

Al Masry were awarded a penalty in the 71st minute after Mohamed Makhlouf was brought down. Salah Mohsen converted successfully to level the match.

The goal was the first penalty Mohamed Shaaban, Al Qanah’s goalkeeper, had conceded this season. He had saved three successive penalties before facing Salah Mohsen’s spot-kick.

Across his Egyptian Premier League career, Shaaban has saved three penalties and conceded nine.

Al Masry pressed for a second goal after Al Qanah dropped deeper following the equaliser, but they were unable to create a clear opportunity to complete the comeback.

Al Masry’s next match is against Abu Qir Fertilizers on Monday 19 October. Al Qanah will face Al Ahly on Wednesday 21 October.
