Bayer Leverkusen face Christian Kofane contract hurdle amid Premier League interest

Bayer Leverkusen are trying to extend Christian Kofane’s contract, but talks with the Cameroon forward have become complicated by concerns over his current role in the team.

The 20-year-old is under contract with the German club until 2029. According to Florian Plettenberg, Bayer Leverkusen want to add a further two years to that agreement, which would keep Kofane at the club until 2031.

However, the player is reportedly unhappy with his status within the squad. Kofane faces competition from Patrik Schick, who is regarded as the first-choice striker in his position, and his limited role is making negotiations with the club’s directors more difficult.

Bayer Leverkusen remain keen to retain the forward for the long term and are convinced he has significant room for development. Africafoot first reported the club’s desire to secure Kofane’s future. A contract running through 2031 would underline the confidence Bayer Leverkusen have in the Cameroon international.

Premier League interest

Kofane is also attracting attention from a number of Premier League clubs, a development reported exclusively by Africafoot several weeks ago. The striker is understood to be interested in the possibility of playing in England at some point in his career.

There has been no final announcement about his future. For an extension to be agreed, Bayer Leverkusen will need to reach an understanding with Kofane over his playing time and his sporting prospects at the club.

Kofane is valued at 40 million euros by Transfermarkt. His annual salary is 660,000 euros, equivalent to 429,000,000 FCFA.

The immediate focus for Bayer Leverkusen will be their upcoming UEFA Europa League fixture against Lech Poznan, which will be their second match in the competition. Further discussions over Kofane’s contract will take place against the backdrop of his desire for a more prominent role and the club’s intention to keep him beyond his current deal.
