Simone Inzaghi and Yenz Vising have named adventurous starting line-ups for Saturday’s Al-Hilal v Al-Ittihad classic in the eighth round of the Saudi Pro League, with both managers opting for a single holding midfielder.
The decision could give each side greater attacking strength and more players in advanced positions, but it also leaves potentially dangerous space in front of their defences. Dion Lopy will operate as Al-Ittihad’s lone defensive midfielder, while Portugal international Ruben Neves will perform the same role for Al-Hilal.
Lopy will be supported in midfield by Ahmed Al-Ghamdi and Houssem Aouar, while Nasser Al-Dawsari and Simon Boabri will play alongside Neves. The system gives both teams additional options when progressing the ball and creating attacks, but places significant responsibility on the lone holding player to protect the centre of the pitch and disrupt the opposition.
One holding midfielder brings both threat and opportunity
The tactical gamble carries extra risk because both teams have attacking players capable of moving between the lines and exploiting open areas. If the midfielders push forward to press or support attacks, Lopy and Neves could be exposed when possession is lost and the opposition breaks quickly.
A successful pass through the middle could bypass the midfield altogether and put the defence under immediate pressure. However, the approach also offers clear benefits. Using one holding midfielder allows more players to occupy attacking areas, while creating greater flexibility in possession and when pressing the opposition.
Its success will depend on how quickly the other midfielders recover, how effectively they provide defensive cover and whether the team moves together to close the spaces around the holding player.
Official teams
Yassine Bounou starts in goal for Al-Hilal, with a defence of Theo Hernandez, Kalidou Koulibaly, Hassan Tambakti and Mohamed Mahzari. Neves anchors the midfield, alongside Al-Dawsari and Boabri.
In attack, Inzaghi has selected Gabriel Martinelli, Summerville and Ollie Watkins as he looks to exploit spaces and threaten Al-Ittihad’s goal.
Al-Hilal: Yassine Bounou; Mohamed Mahzari, Hassan Tambakti, Kalidou Koulibaly, Theo Hernandez; Nasser Al-Dawsari, Ruben Neves, Simon Boabri; Gabriel Martinelli, Summerville, Ollie Watkins.
Al-Ittihad will start Predrag Rajkovic in goal, protected by Fares Abdi, Danilo Pereira, Carlo Simic and Muhannad Al-Shanqeeti. Lopy sits behind Al-Ghamdi and Aouar in midfield.
The front three are Steven Bergwijn, Youssef En-Nesyri and Marwan Al-Sahafi, giving Vising a range of attacking options while demanding considerable discipline from his midfielders when possession changes hands.
The battle in midfield could prove decisive, with Inzaghi seeking to impose an attacking approach and Vising aiming to continue his strong results. The bold formations may provide one team with an attacking advantage, but could just as easily become a weakness if the other side exploits the space behind the lone holding midfielder.
