Mikel Arteta says his conscience is clear over Manchester City spell

Mikel Arteta says his conscience is clear about his time at Manchester City, but has declined to discuss the club’s financial case or whether he has spoken to manager Pep Guardiola about it.

Arteta was Manchester City assistant manager under Guardiola between 2016 and 2019, a period covered by investigations into alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules. An independent commission found that breaches had taken place, according to its report, although Manchester City have appealed the decision.

Speaking at his first news conference since the ruling, Arsenal manager Arteta said it was important to respect the legal process and would not comment on the details of the case while the appeal remained unresolved.

However, when asked directly whether he felt comfortable about his time at Manchester City, Arteta replied: “Yes, my conscience is clear.”

He then declined to say whether he had discussed the case with Guardiola.

“I prefer not to answer these questions,” Arteta said.

The allegations include claims that Manchester City entered into sham contracts with some commercial partners in order to conceal the true value of their revenues.

“I completely understand the question, but it is extremely important to respect the process and the timeline,” Arteta said.

“The case has not been concluded because of the appeal. My position, and I believe the club’s position as well, is not to make any further comments until the matter has been fully resolved.”

Arteta was also asked whether the appeal and any potential punishment should be settled during the current season to protect the integrity of the competition.

The Spaniard refused to offer a view on the timing, instead expressing confidence in those handling the case.

“There are people responsible for this process and for making the right decisions, and I am confident it will be resolved in the appropriate way,” he said.

“We have to trust that.”

Arteta also reiterated his belief that the Premier League remains the best domestic competition in the world, saying he was “100%” convinced of that.

Arsenal welcome fifth-placed Leeds United to Emirates Stadium on Saturday, with Arteta’s side aiming to maintain its challenge for top spot. Arsenal are three points behind leaders Manchester City heading into the match.
