Bafana Bafana set for changes in Eritrea qualifier after Guinea win

Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane is considering changes to his starting line-up for Wednesday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Eritrea, following Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Guinea.

South Africa sit top of Group D after Samukele Kabini’s decisive goal secured the win at Orlando Stadium.

Kabini is expected to come into the team at left-back after Aubrey Modiba was forced off against Guinea with a tight hamstring. The technical team is unlikely to take a risk with Modiba, a decision that would also be welcomed by Mamelodi Sundowns before their MTN8 final against Orlando Pirates on October 10.

Mosimane could also alter his attacking options for the match in Cairo.

Iqraam Rayners had limited involvement against Guinea and was at times isolated in attack. He could therefore drop to the bench, with Yanela Mbuthuma or Cassius Mailula in contention to start as the central striker.

Mbuthuma made an impact after coming on as a substitute in the Guinea match, providing the assist for Kabini’s winning goal. He later missed a clear opportunity to score himself after Teboho Mokoena delivered a well-weighted ball into the box following good work down the right flank.

Bafana Bafana will face Eritrea in Cairo on Wednesday before returning to the same city for an international friendly against Egypt on Sunday.

The Egypt fixture is expected to provide Mosimane with the opportunity to give more members of his squad valuable game time and assess their performances in national-team colours.

Puso Dithejane, Shandre Campbell and Tashreeq Matthews are among those expected to receive an opportunity in that match.
