Mazhamba says junior international football is ‘a blessing’ as he awaits Chiefs chance

Young Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Takalani Mazhamba says his experience with South Africa’s junior national teams is helping him develop while he waits for a sustained first-team opportunity at Naturena.

The 19-year-old was part of the national under-20 side that won the Cosafa U/20 Cup in Mozambique. His success was recognised when he was named goalkeeper of the tournament.

The victory also secured Amajita a place at the 2027 U/20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they will have the chance to defend the title they won in 2025 in Egypt.

Mazhamba believes the standard of competition at major junior international tournaments is important to his progress. He made his Kaizer Chiefs debut in the final Betway Premiership match of last season, when Amakhosi lost 1-0 to Chippa United.

At club level, he faces competition from Brandon Petersen, Renaldo Leaner and Bruce Bvuma. Regular involvement with the national team has therefore provided the young goalkeeper with valuable playing experience.

“These games, I would say, help me in terms of player-profile, growing international football wise in terms of getting more experience,” Mazhamba told the media after Amajita arrived at OR Tambo International Airport on Monday.

Mazhamba was the reserve goalkeeper behind Fletcher Smythe-Lowe at the previous Cosafa U20 tournament, but took over as the number one this time. Smythe-Lowe is currently with the under-23 squad, which is preparing for two international friendly matches against Algeria in Free State this week.

The Chiefs goalkeeper said earning his opportunity after previously playing a supporting role made the tournament particularly significant.

“I was there in the one (Cosafa), but I didn’t manage to get many minutes, but now I played all the games. This thing is a blessing to me. Last time, Fletcher (Smythe-Lowe) was playing and I was supporting him, hoping to get a chance. With God’s grace, I got my chance and I did very well.”

Mazhamba added that Amajita had been focused on winning from the beginning of their training camp.

“From the first day of the camp, we have been working towards the tournament, preparing to go to Mozambique and be victorious. With God, we came back with the trophy.”
