AFCON 2027 qualifiers: Kadiri Ikhana backs Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles to build on Madagascar comeback

Former Nigeria defender Kadiri Ikhana believes the Super Eagles can carry the confidence from their 2-1 comeback win over Madagascar into Tuesday’s away 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea-Bissau.

Eric Chelle’s side had to recover from an early setback at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium before goals from George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor turned the game around and handed Nigeria all three points.

For Ikhana, the manner of the comeback could prove particularly valuable as Nigeria prepare for another demanding qualifying fixture away from home.

Ikhana praises Super Eagles’ response

The former Enyimba coach was impressed by Nigeria’s ability to remain composed after Madagascar struck early, arguing that conceding at such a stage could easily have affected the team’s approach.

“First, I must congratulate the team for the win. I must also say kudos for the way they refused to drop their heads after going behind very early in the game,” Ikhana told Completesports.

Ikhana believes Nigeria’s reaction demonstrated the character required to navigate difficult moments in international football, particularly with the pressure surrounding AFCON qualification.

“Such an early setback can destabilise a team. But the team showed courage, composure, confidence and fighting spirit to recover and get the job done.”

The victory also provided an opportunity for two players to make an immediate impression on the international stage.

Ilenikhena scored on his Super Eagles debut to bring Nigeria level, while Usor came off the bench to produce the decisive goal and complete the comeback.

Debutants earn Ikhana’s praise

Ikhana singled out the two goalscorers for their contributions, noting the significance of starting their senior international careers with goals.

“I must also say kudos to the two goalscorers. I understand that this is their first Super Eagles game. It’s nice to begin one’s senior national team career on a high.”

The former defender admitted that Madagascar provided a sterner challenge than he had anticipated, with Nigeria forced to work hard before securing the result.

“I knew the team was going to win, but I never knew that Madagascar would offer such a level of resistance. But thank God they overcame the setback to get a win.”

Nigeria now turn their attention to Guinea-Bissau, with Chelle’s team seeking another positive result on the road. Ikhana’s assessment suggests the comeback against Madagascar has given the Super Eagles not only three points but also renewed belief heading into their next qualifying assignment.
