AFCON 2027 qualifiers: Moin Chaabani fails major Tunisia test after Uganda draw

Moin Chaabani’s first major test as Tunisia head coach ended in a 1-1 draw against Uganda as the Carthage Eagles made a disappointing start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The result leaves Tunisia bottom of Group H after the opening round, increasing the pressure on Chaabani as he looks to rebuild the national team.

Tunisia will now turn their attention to Monday’s meeting with Botswana, where they will be targeting their first victory of the qualifying campaign.

Chaabani takes charge of Tunisia rebuild

Chaabani was appointed after Tunisia underwent a coaching change following their 2026 World Cup campaign.

Frenchman Hervé Renard had been brought in to coach Tunisia during the World Cup after Sabri Lamouchi was dismissed following a heavy defeat in the opening match.

Tunisia subsequently appointed former international defender Chaabani as they began a new chapter with the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

Tunisia face Botswana next

The draw with Uganda leaves Tunisia with work to do in Group H as they attempt to secure qualification for the continental tournament.

Chaabani and the Carthage Eagles will have another opportunity to collect three points when they host or face Botswana on Monday, September 28.
