Trey Nyoni targets No. 6 role at Liverpool

Trey Nyoni believes his future at Liverpool could be as a holding midfielder after making an encouraging start under new head coach Andoni Iraola.

The 19-year-old has already featured four times this season, including a starting role in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup victory over Tottenham. Iraola also showed his confidence in the academy graduate by sending him on ahead of Ryan Gravenberch during the recent 1-0 win at Bournemouth.

With several experienced midfielders competing for places, Nyoni understands that opportunities must be earned. However, he feels the manager’s energetic, forward-thinking approach suits his natural game.

“I’ve developed a lot. I’ve been with the first team, training, I’ve had a little exposure here and there, which is valuable. Obviously now it’s just about trying to build on that and see where I can fit in the team,” Nyoni said.

He added: “At the minute I’ve been playing as a six, so I assume that’s the role that he probably sees me playing the most. I’m still willing to learn to play as the eight or wherever, but right now I’d probably say primarily a six.”

Nyoni also praised Iraola’s aggressive pressing style and emphasis on attacking quickly after regaining possession.
