Congo beaten by Namibia in opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier

The Congo began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 1-0 defeat by Namibia in Group G on Thursday.

The result was settled shortly after half-time, when Bethuel Muzeu headed in a cross from Riaan Hanamub in the 47th minute to give Namibia the lead. The Congo were unable to find a way back despite making several changes as they looked for an equaliser.

Namibia started the match more positively, but the Congo gradually grew into the contest. Geltany Bantsiele had the first opportunity for the Diables Rouges in the ninth minute, while Christ Makosso also tested the Namibian defence.

The visitors continued to threaten before the interval, with Domi Massoumou and Christopher Ibayi both presented with chances late in the first half. Neither was able to hit the target, however, and the teams went into the break level at 0-0.

The Congo were caught off guard soon after the restart when Hanamub delivered from the left and Muzeu rose to head Namibia into the lead. The Diables Rouges responded by bringing on Mons Bassouamina for Ibayi.

Further substitutions followed, including the introductions of Beni Namboka and Merveil Ndockyt, as the Congo tried to increase the pressure. Their attacking play produced openings but lacked the finish needed to overcome Namibia’s defence.

Bassouamina came close when his effort was blocked, while the Congo’s best late opportunity fell to Yvan Ikia Dimi. The Namibian goalkeeper saved his shot in the 88th minute to preserve the home side’s advantage.

Namibia also had a chance to secure a second goal when Stoffel Witbeen went close, but the opportunity was not converted.

The Congo ultimately suffered a 1-0 defeat and must recover quickly in Group G. Namibia, meanwhile, claimed their first three points of the qualifying campaign.
