Ghana sensation Hafiz Gariba emerges as Barcelona first-team option after injury blow

Hafiz Gariba could be handed a quicker route to the Barcelona first team following the latest injury setback to Andreas Christensen, with the Ghanaian defender already making a strong impression at Barça Atlètic.

The 19-year-old has been one of the standout performers in Juliano Haus Belletti’s side, which has made a perfect defensive start to the Segunda RFEF campaign. Barça Atlètic have conceded no goals in their opening three matches and sit second in the table, behind Osasuna Promesas, who have won all three games.

Gariba has started each of those matches and completed the full 90 minutes, forming a promising centre-back partnership with Àlex Campos.

His performances have highlighted the qualities that have attracted Barcelona’s attention, particularly his pace, ability to cover space behind the defence and confidence in possession. He has also shown a willingness to engage in physical duels, while his composure on the ball allows him to contribute to Barcelona’s build-up from the back.

At 19, Gariba remains a developing player, but his progress has already earned him opportunities around the first team.

From Ghana to Barcelona

Gariba was invited to train with Hansi Flick’s first-team squad during pre-season this summer after an impressive campaign with Juvenil A under Pol Planas.

The opportunity represented recognition of his rapid development and the club’s belief that his physical and technical qualities could eventually translate to senior football.

His pre-season progress was briefly interrupted when he contracted a virus shortly after joining the first-team preparations. The illness kept him out for more than a week and meant he missed Barcelona’s training camp in England.

He later joined Belletti’s squad at the La Vall d’en Bas training camp and gradually rebuilt his fitness before returning to competitive action.

Since then, Gariba has established himself as a regular in the Barça Atlètic defence, strengthening his case for greater opportunities if the first team requires reinforcements.

Madrid wanted him too

Gariba’s journey to Barcelona began far from the Spanish giants.

The defender was discovered by the Marcet Foundation after impressing during trials at an academy in Accra. Bureaucratic difficulties prevented him from immediately joining a major club, forcing him to take a less conventional route into European football.

He subsequently played for Codolar, a Fourth Catalan Division side, giving him an opportunity to develop while playing at the lowest level of Catalan football.

His performances quickly attracted attention despite the modest platform.

Scouts from both Barcelona and Real Madrid watched him in person and both clubs made offers for the teenager. Barcelona eventually won the race to sign him, with Toni Hernández, now academy director at Los Angeles FC, playing a key role in backing the defender.

Flick could turn to Gariba

Christensen’s latest injury has now created another potential opening for Gariba.

The Danish defender is expected to miss more than six weeks, leaving Barcelona with increased depth concerns at centre-back.

Flick already knows Gariba from his involvement with the first-team squad during pre-season and is familiar with the qualities the Ghanaian can offer.

Gariba’s acceleration, ability to defend large spaces and comfort operating behind a high defensive line fit the demands of Flick’s system.

With Barça Atlètic flying defensively and Gariba continuing to play a key role, the Ghanaian now has an opportunity to move closer to the Barcelona first team than originally anticipated.
