Christian Eriksen leaves Wolfsburg by mutual consent to be closer to family

Christian Eriksen has left Wolfsburg after the German club agreed to terminate the Denmark international’s contract by mutual consent.

The midfielder’s deal was due to run until 30 June 2027, but Wolfsburg said both parties had agreed to bring his spell at the club to an early end.

In a statement published on the club’s official website, Wolfsburg said: “Christian Eriksen’s time at Wolfsburg has come to an end. The Danish international, who holds the record for goals scored for his national team, and the club’s management have agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent.”

The club said it had accepted Eriksen’s request after deciding that he should have the freedom to determine the next stage of his career.

“It was clear to us that the decision about his future was his to make,” Wolfsburg said. “We wanted to give him that freedom in these circumstances, which is why we agreed to his request to end the contract.”

Eriksen said his priority was now to spend more time near his family in Denmark.

“It is important for me now to be close to my family in Denmark,” he told Wolfsburg’s official website. “I am pleased that we were able to find a solution together.”

The 30-year-old added that his time with Wolfsburg had included both positive and difficult moments, while expressing confidence in the club’s future.

“My time at Wolfsburg has included many happy and sad moments,” Eriksen said. “I know the club is now in safe hands as it seeks to return to the German top flight, and I am certain that Wolfsburg has a bright future ahead.”

Eriksen joined Wolfsburg on a free transfer a year ago. During his time with the German club, he made 34 appearances in the league and German Cup, scoring three goals and providing 10 assists.
