Benjamin Sesko out of Slovenia squad with shin injury

Benjamin Sesko has withdrawn from Slovenia’s Nations League squad after suffering a shin injury in Manchester United’s League Cup defeat by Brighton.

The 23-year-old striker will remain with Manchester United during the three-week international break and is due to undergo tests this week to determine the extent of the problem.

Sesko missed Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw at Fulham after sustaining the injury in the previous week’s defeat. He was not fit enough to play at Craven Cottage.

“Manchester United can confirm that Benjamin Sesko has withdrawn from the Slovenia squad ahead of the upcoming three-week international break,” the club said.

“Benjamin will undergo tests this week before defining his individual recovery plan.”

Sesko has scored twice for Manchester United since the beginning of the season, but his latest injury will prevent him from joining Slovenia for their upcoming fixtures.

He will miss two matches against Scotland, along with games against North Macedonia and Switzerland.

Sesko is the fourth Manchester United player to withdraw from international duty this week. Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo have pulled out of England’s squad, while goalkeeper Karl Darlow has left the Wales camp.

Manchester United, managed by Michael Carrick, have made a difficult start to the Premier League season. They are 12th in the table after taking five points from their opening five matches.

Their next league fixture is at home to bottom club Tottenham on October 10. The timing of that match gives the club an opportunity to assess Sesko’s injury and decide when he can return to action.
