Spain extend Luis de la Fuente contract to 2032

Spain have extended Luis de la Fuente’s contract as head coach until 2032, ensuring he will remain in charge for the 2028 and 2032 European Championships and the 2030 World Cup.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed the agreement on Monday after it was approved by the organisation’s board of directors. De la Fuente’s previous contract was due to expire in 2028.

RFEF chairman Rafael Louzan supported the decision, saying continuity was important for the national team’s current project. De la Fuente’s long-standing relationship with the federation was also a factor in the decision to extend his tenure.

The 65-year-old became Spain manager in December 2022, following Luis Enrique’s departure after Spain were eliminated by Morocco in the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup.

De la Fuente has since guided Spain to three major international honours. The team won the UEFA Nations League in 2023, Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup.

Spain’s World Cup success was their second triumph in the competition’s history. It came after a productive spell for De la Fuente, who had worked with the country’s youth teams for about a decade before taking charge of the senior side.

His achievements at youth level include European Under-19 and Under-21 titles, along with a silver medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan.

The new agreement will keep De la Fuente in the dugout for the 2030 World Cup, which Spain will co-host with Portugal and Morocco. It will also cover Euro 2032 in Italy and Turkiye.

Spain’s next international campaign begins on 26 September, when they face England at Wembley. They will then play Croatia in Seville, meet the Czech Republic in Oviedo and travel to Croatia.

Those fixtures will be Spain’s first matches since their World Cup final victory over Argentina in July.
