Ismael Doukoure’s Ivory Coast debut delayed amid injury and eligibility uncertainty

Ismael Doukoure will not join Cote d’Ivoire during this international break despite being selected by head coach Herve Renard, with an injury and an unresolved administrative issue surrounding his international switch.

The 23-year-old Strasbourg defender had been expected to receive his first call-up after Atalanta centre-back Odilon Kossounou withdrew. Doukoure has made three appearances this season, starting all three matches.

However, it was Junior Diaz of Troyes who was brought into the squad instead, prompting confusion among Ivory Coast supporters. Radio Nostalgie provided further details about the situation on Monday.

Doukoure was first approached by former Cote d’Ivoire manager Jean-Louis Gasset. At that stage, the player turned down the opportunity because he wanted to establish himself at club level first.

The matter was subsequently taken up by Emerse Fae and his coaching staff. At the same time, France continued to show interest in the versatile defender, who represented Les Bleus from Under-19 to Under-23 level.

His ability to play on either side of central defence, as a holding midfielder or at right-back has made him an attractive option to France manager Zinedine Zidane.

Doukoure ultimately chose Cote d’Ivoire. The Lille-born player has spent more than a year completing the administrative process required to obtain Ivorian nationality, while people close to him say the Elephants have always been his priority.

A committed supporter of Yaya Toure, he was approached about taking part in the 2026 World Cup campaign but postponed his international arrival. As captain of RCS, he did not feel entitled to join the squad because he had not played in the qualifying campaign.

His representatives confirmed that Doukoure was formally called up by Renard shortly before Strasbourg’s Ligue 1 match against Paris FC last Saturday, which they lost 2-1. He had held an Ivorian passport for fewer than 72 hours and was due to arrive in Abidjan on Sunday evening.

However, after completing the match, he felt discomfort. An MRI scan was carried out in Paris on Sunday morning, after which he withdrew from the squad.

“The player is disappointed,” his representatives said, although a future opportunity is expected.

The injury appears to have concealed a separate problem. According to the report, Doukoure was not yet eligible from an administrative standpoint to represent Cote d’Ivoire.

Under a new FIFA rule, a player seeking to change their sporting nationality must submit the application no later than 15 days before the start of the international window. Doukoure could not meet that deadline because he had only received his Ivorian passport less than 72 hours earlier.

Unless there is another change of plan, he is expected to join Cote d’Ivoire during the next international window.
