Ngwenya one goal from setting new PSL scoring record

Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya is one goal away from claiming the longest scoring run in PSL league history after extending his remarkable streak to seven consecutive matches for AmaZulu.

The 23-year-old striker scored the only goal as AmaZulu beat Polokwane City 1-0 at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, continuing an extraordinary start to the Betway Premiership season.

Ngwenya’s latest effort moved him level with a record that has stood for more than 20 years. According to OptaJabu, only Grant Young and Esau Kanyenda had previously scored in seven successive league matches during the PSL era.

Young achieved the feat with Hellenic in 1999, before Kanyenda matched it for Jomo Cosmos in 2002. Ngwenya has now joined that select group, but can move clear of them when AmaZulu play their next league fixture.

The forward has scored in all seven of the club’s league matches this season. His goal against Polokwane City was particularly significant as it secured another three points for AmaZulu and maintained their position among the early contenders under manager Arthur Zwane.

Ngwenya has scored eight times in the Betway Premiership so far, including one match in which he found the net twice. His consistency means he has scored in every league appearance for AmaZulu, also known as Usuthu.

That sequence has placed the recently emerged attacking threat on the verge of a record that has remained intact since the late 1990s. One more goal would give Ngwenya the longest scoring streak by a player in PSL league history.

His form has also been central to AmaZulu’s strong opening to the campaign. While Saturday’s result ensured the Durban club collected another important victory, attention will now turn to whether Ngwenya can make history in his next appearance.
