Cape Town City win first Cape Derby as Magesi FC stay perfect

Cape Town City claimed the first Cape Derby of the season with a 2-0 victory over Hope FC at Athlone Stadium on Sunday.

Teenager Emile Witbooi put City ahead in the 30th minute, producing a composed finish from the edge of the penalty area. Three minutes later, he turned provider, setting up Cheswyn Philander to score from close range and complete the victory.

Magesi FC maintained the Championship’s only perfect record by beating Highbury FC 1-0 in a meeting between the top two sides.

Naeem Amoojee scored the decisive goal against his former side, sending Magesi to the top of the table. The defeat was Highbury’s first of the campaign.

Saturday’s Championship results

Leicesterford City scored four second-half goals to beat Gomora United 4-1 at Malamuelele Stadium.

Kavendree Makhene struck twice for the visitors, with Banele Gama and Kamohelo Mahlatsi also finding the net. All four of Leicesterford City’s goals came after the interval.

Hungry Lions recorded their first win of the season with a 2-0 success against The Bees.

The Bees remain bottom of the table and are still without a victory after four matches.

Real Native also secured consecutive Championship wins, defeating Lerumo Lions 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Bafana Nana scored the only goal after half-time to settle the contest in Real Native’s favour.

Midlands Wanderers and North West University drew 1-1, leaving NWU without a win this season.

The result gave North West University a second point of the campaign, while Midlands Wanderers recorded their fourth successive draw.

University of Pretoria and Orbit College played out a goalless draw. Orbit College finished the match with 10 players.

Upington City returned to winning form with a 3-2 victory away to Venda FC.

Clayton Maravela scored twice and Nation Ndlovu added the other goal for the visitors. Obarate Morgan and Rankoko Tau were on target for Venda FC.
