Marumo Gallants goalkeeper Emile Lako earns first Cameroon call-up

Marumo Gallants goalkeeper Emile Lako says he is “overjoyed” after being selected for the Cameroon squad for this month’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The 27-year-old, who was born in Douala, was a surprise inclusion in the Indomitable Lions’ final 26-player squad.

Cameroon begin their qualifying campaign at home against Comoros on 24 September before travelling to face Congo on 29 September.

“It’s my first call-up. I can’t explain how it feels. It’s too good. It’s too good to explain. I’m feeling like I achieved something,” Lako told Soccer Laduma.

The goalkeeper said the selection was particularly significant because of the strength of competition for places in the Cameroon side.

“I’m happy for myself because I know to be there inside the 26-player Cameroon national team, it’s tough,” he said.

“And it’s not even a provisional team. It’s the final squad.”

Lako is now hoping to benefit from the opportunity to work alongside some of Cameroon’s leading players and establish himself as a regular international selection.

He said receiving a national-team call-up was something footballers continually aspire to, provided they remain committed to their work.

“You know, when you play football, you always think one day you can be there. You just train hard and pray, then you leave the rest to God,” he said.

Lako also spoke of his desire to represent Cameroon fully if he is given playing time during the qualifiers.

“My brother, you know, when you are a football player and when you get the call for the national team, normally you are looking forward to represent your country,” he said.

“When you have a few minutes to play, you need to play for this badge.”

The goalkeeper acknowledged the responsibility attached to wearing the Cameroon shirt, but said he believed the timing of his call-up was part of a larger plan.

“This badge is too heavy, but we need to play for this badge. What can I say? It’s the time of God,” Lako said.

“I’m busy working and training every day. It’s God. He says, ‘It’s your moment to shine.’ I can’t say no. I just say yes.”

The international recognition follows a notable period in Lako’s club career. He recently completed a move from second-tier side Casric Stars to top-flight outfit Marumo Gallants, adding the Cameroon selection to a series of positive developments in recent months.
