Mamelodi Sundowns Drawn Against Wiliete SC in CAF Champions League Opener

Mamelodi Sundowns will begin their defence of the CAF Champions League title against Angolan club Wiliete SC in the second preliminary round.

The reigning champions were given a bye through the opening round after being included among the seeded teams for the draw. They will now face Wiliete SC, who secured their place in the next stage by beating Seychelles side Foresters 1-0 in the second leg on Thursday evening.

That result gave the Angolan club a 5-1 aggregate victory.

Wiliete SC’s squad includes former Orlando Pirates winger Gilberto Miguel, who now plays for the Angolan outfit.

The tie carries added significance for Sundowns, with the winners earning a place in the CAF Champions League group stages. CAF has confirmed that the second preliminary round matches will be played between 16-18 October.

Miguel Cardoso’s side must first turn their attention to domestic action, with a Betway Premiership meeting against Chippa United scheduled for Saturday.

Sundowns will then represent the continent against Al Ahli in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup next weekend, before beginning their Champions League title defence against Wiliete SC.
