Kaizer Chiefs face tactical dilemma as key defenders return

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz must decide whether to retain the system that has helped his side make an unbeaten start or restore his preferred wide defenders for Saturday’s Betway Premiership meeting with Polokwane City.

The Soweto club travel to Limpopo for the fixture at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, with the match presenting Da Cruz with a significant selection challenge.

The French coach has relied on a five-man defensive structure during the opening phase of the campaign, alternating between 3-5-2 and 5-2-3. That approach has helped Kaizer Chiefs negotiate the early weeks without defeat, including a narrow 3-2 victory over Siwelele FC.

However, the expected returns of Bradley Cross and Reeve Frosler have complicated the decision over how the team should line up.

Both players are natural wide defenders and are now back in full contention. Their availability gives Da Cruz the option of moving back to a conventional back four and reintroducing specialist full-backs to the flanks.

That change could come at the expense of Pule Mmodi, who has impressed after being asked to operate in an unfamiliar role.

During the injury problems affecting the squad, the attacking winger was moved to left wing-back. Despite playing outside his usual position, Mmodi earned considerable praise for the way he adapted and contributed to the team.

Da Cruz therefore faces a choice between maintaining the structure that has delivered a positive start and changing it to accommodate the return of two recognised defensive players. Keeping the current system would allow Mmodi to continue in a role in which he has gained momentum, while reverting to four at the back would give Cross and Frosler the opportunity to resume their normal duties.

The outcome of that selection call could have an important bearing on Chiefs’ performance against Polokwane City. A victory on the road would strengthen the club’s early title ambitions and sustain the momentum built during the opening fixtures.

Chiefs chasing another rise up the table

Kaizer Chiefs currently sit third in the Betway Premiership standings after collecting 11 points from their first five matches.

A win in Limpopo would move their total to 14 points. That would ensure they remain inside the league’s top three and allow them to maintain direct pressure on the teams leading the competition.

The fixture is consequently important not only because of Da Cruz’s tactical decision but also because of Chiefs’ position in the early title race. The coach will have to determine whether the stability of the five-man block should take priority or whether the return of Cross and Frosler makes a back-four formation the more suitable option.

With the match scheduled for Saturday at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, the decision will be closely watched as Kaizer Chiefs attempt to continue their strong start against Polokwane City.
