Former Orlando Pirates striker Thulasizwe Mbuyane enters politics ahead of November elections

Former Orlando Pirates striker Thulasizwe Mbuyane has been nominated as a councillor candidate for ward 67 in the City of Tshwane ahead of South Africa’s Local Government Elections in November.

Mbuyane, who was affectionately known as ‘Juju’ during his playing career, has joined the Economic Liberation Forum South Africa and will contest the ward under the party’s banner.

The former striker says his decision to enter politics has been influenced by George Weah, the Liberian football legend who went on to become president of Liberia. Mbuyane also hopes his move into public life will allow him to support young people and help improve conditions in his community.

“I think it’s an exciting journey for me. I spent time with the local guys on the ground and understand what they want in terms of changes. This is a great opportunity for me to represent and bring change in the community,” noted the Mamelodi-born man.

Mbuyane spoke about his nomination in an exclusive interview with KickOff, saying he understood that moving into politics would present a new challenge.

“Look, I am not a veteran of politics, and it won’t be easy. I am inspired by the former football star George Weah, who moved from football and became the president of a country (Liberia). I want to inspire the youth.

“I played my part in football and now I want to take this opportunity to change the lives of our people,” he added.

His political priorities include community development, youth empowerment and improved service delivery. Those commitments form part of his manifesto as he prepares to seek election in Tshwane.

Mbuyane ended his football career in 2025 after playing for Royal Eagles in Durban. Before joining the club, he also represented Free State Stars and Mpumalanga Black Aces.

The former Orlando Pirates forward is now seeking to transfer the public profile he built in football into a role focused on local government and community issues. His campaign will centre on the needs of residents in ward 67, with particular emphasis on young people and the delivery of services.

His move follows the example of Weah, one of football’s most prominent figures, who successfully made the transition from international football to national politics in Liberia. Mbuyane says he wants to use his own experience in the sport to encourage the next generation and contribute to positive change.

Should he be elected, community development, youth empowerment and service delivery will be among the areas he has pledged to prioritise.
