African stars light up Europe as Bryan Mbeumo, Assane Diao and Serhou Guirassy steal the show

African footballers once again commanded attention across Europe’s top five leagues, producing decisive performances, spectacular goals and match-winning moments in England, Italy, Germany, Spain and France.

From Bryan Mbeumo’s brilliant strike for Manchester United to Assane Diao’s brace for Como, Ibrahim Maza’s thunderous finish for Bayer Leverkusen and Serhou Guirassy’s goal-and-assist contribution for Borussia Dortmund, African talent was at the heart of a dramatic weekend across the continent.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also continued his remarkable scoring run in Spain, while Nicolas Pepe, Kamory Doumbia and Lassine Sinayoko delivered influential displays in France.

The results may have varied, but the individual performances underlined the growing influence of African players at the highest level of European football.

Mbeumo shines but United are denied late

Bryan Mbeumo produced one of the weekend’s outstanding individual moments as Manchester United were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Cameroon international was a constant attacking threat and broke the deadlock just 61 seconds after the restart with a superb finish.

Receiving possession on the right, Mbeumo cut inside before riding two challenges and curling an exquisite 18-yard effort into the bottom corner.

It was a goal that showcased the winger’s composure, balance and ability to create something from seemingly limited space.

Mbeumo had already threatened in the first half when Luke Shaw’s cross picked him out at the far post. His cushioned header found Bruno Fernandes, whose volley struck the crossbar.

United had controlled much of the opening period but could not turn their dominance into a decisive advantage.

Everton eventually found an equaliser seven minutes from full time through Tyrique George, only for Benjamin Sesko to restore United’s lead with a header in the 88th minute.

Just when United appeared set to leave with all three points, Ainsley Maitland-Niles produced a dramatic late intervention, curling home in the sixth minute of added time.

The result extended Everton’s unbeaten start to four matches and denied Mbeumo the reward his performance appeared to deserve.

Assane Diao fires Como to impressive win

In Italy, Assane Diao was the star of the show as Como maintained their unbeaten start to the Serie A campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory over Genoa at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

The Senegalese forward scored twice and played a central role in Como’s comeback after Genoa had taken an early lead.

The hosts moved ahead before the 20-minute mark when Milutin Osmajic converted Lorenzo Colombo’s cutback.

Como responded quickly, with Martin Baturina restoring parity with a low effort into the far corner.

Diao then completed the turnaround by capitalising on an error from Genoa goalkeeper Justin Bijlow.

The Senegal international showed excellent control before producing a composed volley that squeezed underneath the goalkeeper to put Como in front.

His goal sparked celebrations on the touchline, with head coach Cesc Fabregas clearly delighted with his side’s response.

Nico Paz extended Como’s advantage before the break, leaving Genoa with a mountain to climb.

The visitors managed the second half intelligently while continuing to threaten on the counter, and Diao eventually completed his brace in the 78th minute.

After receiving an assist from substitute Moise Kean, he calmly placed his finish into the far corner to complete a memorable individual display.

Ibrahim Maza caps Leverkusen rout

Germany also witnessed an influential African performance as Algeria international Ibrahim Maza helped Bayer Leverkusen sweep aside Union Berlin 4-0 at the BayArena.

Leverkusen needed only 41 seconds to establish control, with Equi Fernandez opening the scoring.

Facundo Medina then doubled the advantage with a header before Patrik Schick added a third shortly after the restart.

Union were already struggling to cope with Leverkusen’s attacking pressure when Maza put the result beyond doubt in the 60th minute.

The Algeria international combined brilliantly with Schick before unleashing a powerful right-footed strike from the edge of the box.

His finish flew high into the net, providing a fitting conclusion to another dominant Leverkusen display.

Maza’s performance further underlined the growing presence of African players among the younger generation making an impact in Europe’s major leagues.

Guirassy inspires Dortmund comeback

Serhou Guirassy was equally influential in Germany, helping Borussia Dortmund recover from two goals down to defeat Hoffenheim 3-2.

Dortmund appeared destined for defeat after Hoffenheim established a commanding advantage through Leon Avdullahu and Tim Lemperle.

But Guirassy changed the momentum shortly after the hour mark.

The Guinea international produced a composed dinked finish after Waldemar Anton won possession and found him inside the box, giving Dortmund a route back into the contest.

The striker then turned provider.

Moments later, Guirassy threaded an intelligent pass through to substitute Fabio Silva, who produced an excellent angled finish to bring Dortmund level.

The visitors completed the turnaround three minutes before the end when Albian Hajdari inadvertently turned Ethan Nwaneri’s cross into his own net.

Guirassy’s contribution was crucial to a comeback that appeared highly unlikely when Dortmund trailed by two goals.

Aubameyang rolls back the years in Spain

In LaLiga, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang continued his remarkable scoring form as Deportivo A Coruna came from behind twice to defeat Villarreal 3-2.

The Gabonese veteran was central to the comeback, contributing a goal and two assists in a performance that demonstrated his enduring attacking quality.

Ivory Coast international Nicolas Pepe opened the scoring after 19 minutes, taking advantage of hesitant goalkeeping from Leo Roman before calmly lifting a left-footed finish into the far corner.

It was Pepe’s second goal of the season.

Aubameyang then began to impose himself on the contest, setting up Lusimi Cruz for the equaliser shortly before half-time.

Villarreal regained the lead after the interval when Adama Traore turned the ball into his own net, but Deportivo responded almost immediately.

Aubameyang again played a decisive role, creating the opportunity for substitute Zakaria Eddahchouri to restore parity.

The Gabon striker then completed the comeback himself in the 89th minute.

He pounced on a loose pass, accelerated into space and fired a powerful right-footed effort beyond Luiz Junior.

The goal extended Aubameyang’s scoring streak to four consecutive LaLiga matches and helped lift Deportivo into the top four.

At this stage of his career, the former Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund forward continues to demonstrate that his instinct inside the penalty area remains as dangerous as ever.

Kamory Doumbia delivers in France

France provided another strong showing from African players, with Mali international Kamory Doumbia scoring twice to give Brest their first Ligue 1 victory of the season.

Brest defeated 10-man Le Havre 2-1 at Stade Oceane, with Doumbia accounting for both of the visitors’ goals.

The Malian midfielder opened the scoring after just 10 minutes, confidently converting from the penalty spot after Ludovic Ajorque had been brought down by goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau.

Brest were handed another advantage before half-time when Le Havre’s Junior Mwanga was sent off for bringing down Mama Balde as the last defender.

Doumbia took advantage six minutes after the restart.

He arrived at the right moment inside the penalty area to meet Balde’s pass and calmly finished from close range.

Rayan Fofana pulled one back for Le Havre from the penalty spot, but Doumbia’s double proved decisive as Brest secured their first three points of the campaign.

Wahi and Bourabaa find the net

There was also African involvement in Nice’s 1-1 draw with Le Mans at the Allianz Riviera.

Adil Bourabaa stunned the hosts in the 13th minute with a spectacular 25-yard effort that flew into the far corner.

Nice responded with increasing pressure and eventually found their equaliser before half-time.

Sofiane Diop released Elye Wahi through on goal, and the forward displayed impressive composure to round Ewan Hatfout before finishing from a tight angle.

It was Wahi’s first goal of the season, although neither side could find a winner as both continued to search for their first Ligue 1 victory.

Lassine Sinayoko steals the Marseille show

Lassine Sinayoko delivered perhaps the most dramatic individual performance in France, scoring a hat-trick as Paris FC secured a historic 3-2 victory over Marseille at the Stade Velodrome.

The Mali international needed only 25 seconds to open the scoring, sliding onto Luca Koleosho’s inviting cross to register the fastest Ligue 1 goal in more than two years.

Marseille struggled to contain Sinayoko, who restored Paris FC’s lead in the 19th minute.

He rose highest to meet Pablo Pagis’ dangerous delivery, with his header taking a deflection before finding the net.

Marseille twice fought back through Amine Gouiri, keeping the home side alive in a fiercely contested encounter.

But Sinayoko had the final say.

Late in the match, VAR awarded Paris FC a penalty for handball, giving the Mali forward the opportunity to complete his treble.

He showed no hesitation, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot and sealing a remarkable victory.
