Aston Villa lead Club Brugge 3-1 at half-time in UEFA Champions League

Aston Villa have taken firm control of their opening UEFA Champions League match, leading Club Brugge 3-1 at half-time after an impressive first-half display in Belgium.

John McGinn put the visitors ahead in the 11th minute, converting Aston Villa’s first major opportunity of the match and immediately increasing the pressure on Club Brugge. The early goal gave Unai Emery’s side the start they wanted and created an unsettled atmosphere for the Belgian team.

Club Brugge responded eight minutes later, however, with Hugo Vetlesen bringing the hosts level in the 19th minute. The equaliser followed a well-worked team move and offered the home side a route back into a match in which Aston Villa had initially established the tempo.

The response from the English side was immediate. Rather than allowing the setback to disrupt their momentum, Aston Villa resumed control of possession and attacking play. Emiliano Buendia restored their lead only a few minutes after Vetlesen’s goal, applying a precise finish to put the visitors back in front.

Aston Villa’s attacking efficiency then continued to stand out. Emery’s players looked composed in possession and technically superior during the remainder of the half, managing the pace of the game without being placed under sustained danger by Club Brugge.

Nicolas Jackson played a major part in that dominance. The Senegalese forward repeatedly stretched the home defence with his movement and persistent runs, creating problems even when he was not directly involved in the build-up.

His contribution was rewarded shortly before the interval. Jackson scored Aston Villa’s third goal in the 43rd minute, giving the visitors a two-goal advantage and completing a highly effective first half for the English club.

Club Brugge now face a difficult task after going into the dressing room 3-1 behind. They will need to produce a significantly improved performance after the break if they are to overturn the deficit and prevent Aston Villa from completing a winning start to their UEFA Champions League campaign.

For Aston Villa, the opening 45 minutes have provided evidence of their attacking quality and composure under Emery. Their quick reaction after conceding the equaliser has been particularly important, with the visitors re-establishing their authority before Buendia and Jackson extended their advantage.

The scoreline leaves Club Brugge needing to find a response at the start of the second half, while Aston Villa can approach the restart with the confidence generated by three goals and a commanding lead.
