Poland edge Mexico 2-1 to strengthen U20 qualification hopes

Poland moved a significant step closer to progressing from Group A after securing a narrow 2-1 victory over Mexico on the second matchday of the tournament.

The hosts fell behind after only five minutes when Bartczak turned the ball into her own net, giving Mexico an early advantage despite Poland playing in front of their home supporters.

Poland responded almost immediately. Zwiazek restored parity four minutes later, ensuring the sides went into the remainder of the match level after a fast-paced opening spell.

Mexico controlled much of the contest and finished with 63% possession, applying sustained pressure as they looked to regain the lead. However, Poland proved more effective in the decisive moments and eventually turned their greater efficiency in front of goal into the winning margin.

The crucial breakthrough came in the 76th minute. Poland were awarded a penalty and Witek kept her composure to convert from the spot, putting the hosts ahead with the match entering its final stages.

Mexico continued to push for an equaliser, using their territorial and possession advantage to test the Polish defence. Poland, however, held firm under pressure and protected their lead until the final whistle.

The result gives the host nation a valuable advantage in the race to reach the next stage of the competition. While Mexico had enjoyed the greater share of the ball and had generally dictated play, Poland’s ability to make the most of the opportunities that mattered proved decisive.

For Poland, the result represents an important foundation for the remainder of their campaign. They recovered quickly from the early own goal, levelled before Mexico could build on its lead and then found a late winner through Witek’s penalty.

Mexico’s performance was marked by a clear dominance of possession and an ability to sustain pressure, particularly towards the end of the match. Yet that control did not translate into enough goals to secure a result.

Instead, Poland’s resilience in defence during the closing stages ensured that the hosts claimed all three points. The victory leaves them with a serious opportunity to qualify for the knockout phase as the Group A campaign develops.

The Polish side’s success was therefore built on two contrasting qualities: Mexico’s superiority in possession and Poland’s greater clinical edge. After conceding in the fifth minute, the hosts showed the character to recover and ultimately secured a decisive win in front of their home crowd.
