Achraf Hakimi joins Samuel Eto’o among Africa’s three-time Champions League winners

Achraf Hakimi has moved level with Cameroon great Samuel Eto’o as one of the African players to have won the UEFA Champions League three times, after helping Paris Saint-Germain claim another European title on Saturday.

The French champions needed a penalty shootout to overcome Arsenal in the final at the Puskas Arena on Saturday night. Hakimi delivered a composed performance at right-back and scored his penalty as PSG secured victory.

The success earned the Morocco international his third Champions League winner’s medal, drawing him level with Eto’o in the list of African players with the most titles in the competition.

Eto’o won the trophy twice with Barcelona, in 2006 and 2009, before playing a key role in Inter Milan’s triumph in 2010. That victory was the Italian club’s first Champions League title.

Hakimi’s first success came with Real Madrid in 2018. He has since added two more winners’ medals after helping PSG lift the trophy in successive seasons.

Reflecting on the achievement, Hakimi said: “It is not easy to achieve the title twice in a row, but we did it,” as reported by Ysscores.

The defender also praised PSG head coach and stressed the importance of the collective effort behind their success.

“I always repeat that the coach has the final say in the club. We follow him and trust him. From day one, he assured us that the team is more important than individuals.”

Hakimi added: “We are very happy to have him with us. We have built not just a team, but a family.”

His latest medal places him alongside Eto’o among the African players with three Champions League titles. Hakimi’s record combines his 2018 success with Real Madrid and the back-to-back triumphs he has now achieved with PSG.
