Schalke end Bayern Munich’s scoring run with goalless Bundesliga draw

Schalke earned a valuable point on their return to the Bundesliga by holding Bayern Munich to a goalless draw on Saturday.

The result leaves Bayern with four points from their opening two matches, placing them fourth in the Bundesliga table. Schalke, meanwhile, have one point and sit 14th.

The draw brought an end to Bayern’s remarkable scoring sequence in the league. They had found the net in 47 consecutive Bundesliga matches before being held by Schalke, and this was the first time they had failed to score in the competition for 567 days.

Schalke’s goalkeeper Loris Karius played a central role in securing the result. He made five saves during the match, including two from attempts taken inside the penalty area, as the hosts resisted sustained pressure from the visitors.

Bayern dominated the attacking statistics but could not turn that control into a goal. They recorded 15 shots compared with four for Schalke, while six of Bayern’s attempts were on target. Schalke failed to register a shot on target against Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Despite the difference in goal attempts, Bayern were unable to break through a Schalke defence backed by Karius’ performance. The newly returned Bundesliga side protected their clean sheet to claim a point against one of the division’s leading teams.

Bayern will now turn their attention to their next match, against Elversberg on Sunday in the third round of the Bundesliga season.

Schalke will also play their third-round fixture next week, travelling to face Union Berlin on Friday.
