Barcelona missed out to resign Abde Ezzalzouli

Barcelona failed in their attempt to re-sign Moroccan international Abde Ezzalzouli from Real Betis during the summer transfer window after negotiations between the two clubs broke down over financial disagreements.

According to reports, Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick was keen to bring the 24-year-old winger back to the Catalan club, having been impressed by his pace, dribbling ability and attacking qualities.

The German tactician reportedly viewed Ezzalzouli as an ideal option to strengthen Barcelona’s attacking department, with his ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations offering an additional dimension to the team’s forward line.

Barcelona subsequently opened negotiations with Real Betis over a possible transfer but failed to reach an agreement after the clubs disagreed on the payment structure and financial terms of the proposed deal.

Real Betis were reluctant to part ways with one of their key attacking players without receiving adequate compensation, while Barcelona’s financial limitations and La Liga’s salary-cap restrictions prevented them from improving their offer.

Despite the failed negotiations, Barcelona continue to monitor Ezzalzouli’s performances, leaving open the possibility of revisiting their interest if the circumstances change.

The Moroccan winger joined Real Betis from Osasuna in the summer of 2023 for a reported €7.5 million after previously playing for Barcelona. The Catalan club also retained 50 per cent of the rights to any future sale of the player.

Since arriving in Seville, Ezzalzouli has continued to develop into an exciting attacking talent in Spanish football, using his pace, close control and direct approach to trouble opposition defenders.

His performances have reportedly strengthened Barcelona’s interest, with Flick viewing the Moroccan international as a player who could provide valuable attacking depth.

Although their summer pursuit ended without an agreement, Ezzalzouli remains a player to watch as Barcelona consider their options for strengthening the squad in future transfer windows.
