Mahmoud Mamdouh: Modern Sport striker’s failed Zamalek move revealed as he leads Egyptian Premier League scoring

Mahmoud Mamdouh’s agent, Sayed Marei, has revealed why the Modern Sport striker’s proposed move to Zamalek failed, as the forward continues to lead the Egyptian Premier League scoring charts.

Mamdouh has scored eight goals this season and his agent said the striker’s main ambition now is to earn a place in the Egypt national team.

“Mahmoud Mamdouh had been attracting the attention of the leading clubs since he was a player at Haras El Hodoud,” Marei told MBC Masr.

“He is producing outstanding performances with Modern Sport this season and is the league’s top scorer with eight goals. His biggest objective is to join the Egypt national team.”

Marei also explained that Zamalek had previously attempted to sign the player, but no agreement was reached with Haras El Hodoud.

“About a year ago, Zamalek spoke to me about signing Mahmoud Mamdouh,” he said. “The player signed the contracts, on the condition that Zamalek reached an agreement with Haras El Hodoud.

“But that did not happen. I do not know whether it was because of the registration ban or the financial terms. However, Zamalek did not officially contact Haras El Hodoud in the first place, and the player eventually moved to Modern Sport.”

The account differs from earlier comments made by Zamalek board member Ahmed Suleiman, who said the club had tried to recruit Mamdouh while he was overseeing the football department.

“When I was in charge of football at Zamalek, we tried to sign a number of promising players, including Mahmoud Mamdouh, who is currently at Modern Sport,” Suleiman told MBC Masr 2.

“The player signed papers with me while I was in hospital. I do not know what happened afterwards, after I sent the documents to the board of directors. He then joined Modern Sport.”

Mamdouh strengthened his position at the top of the scoring standings by scoring twice against ZED, taking his season tally to eight goals.

He now leads the chart by four goals from his nearest challengers.

The striker has reached eight goals in seven league appearances this season. That total is equal to the number of goals he scored across the previous four seasons combined in the competition.

Mamdouh’s latest goals therefore mean he has matched his entire scoring return from those four campaigns in only seven matches this season, while remaining the Egyptian Premier League’s leading scorer.
