Patrice Carteron has likened Al Ahly to “Bayern Munich of Egypt” and compared Zamalek with Napoli, highlighting the contrasting styles of the two Egyptian clubs he has previously managed.

The French coach, now in charge of UAE club Al Dhafra, made the comments in an interview with Abu Dhabi Sports Channel.

“Al Ahly are extremely well organised,” Carteron said. “Al Ahly are Bayern Munich of Egypt. They are like a machine and operate in a systematic, organised way.”

Carteron then characterised Zamalek in a different manner, pointing to the club’s fighting spirit and connection with the game.

“Zamalek are like Napoli, relying on spirit and a love of football,” he said. “Zamalek always come from behind and win.”

Although he has worked with both clubs, Carteron said his personal affiliation was closer to Zamalek.

“I am more Zamalek than Al Ahly in terms of affiliation, but I love and appreciate both clubs,” he added.

Carteron took charge of Al Dhafra in September last year. The appointment made the UAE side the 10th Arab team he has managed during his coaching career.

His previous clubs in the Arab world include Wadi Degla, Al Nassr Saudi Club, Al Ahly, Raja CA, Zamalek, Al Taawoun, Al-Ettifaq, Umm Salal and Wydad AC.

The Frenchman has had two separate spells as Zamalek manager. His first was during 2019-2020, before he returned for a second period in 2021-2022.

Carteron also has previous experience of the Egyptian league with Wadi Degla and Al Ahly.
