Neymar injury leaves Santos facing crucial absence in Brazilian league survival fight

Neymar will miss between four and eight weeks after Santos confirmed the forward has suffered a serious muscle injury during their Copa do Brasil match against Palmeiras.

The 34-year-old was sent for medical examinations after sustaining the problem, with Santos later announcing that he had suffered a grade 2B muscle injury to the rectus femoris in his right thigh.

The diagnosis represents a major setback for Neymar, who has continued to struggle with injuries. His latest absence is expected to keep him out for several weeks and comes at a difficult point in Santos’ fight to avoid relegation from the Brazilian league.

Santos are 14th in the table with 29 points from 24 rounds. They are only four points clear of the relegation places, increasing the importance of Neymar’s recovery and reducing the options available to the club during a key period of the season.

The injury was initially feared to be less serious, but Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo reported that the problem was worse than first expected. Further assessment confirmed the extent of the muscle damage and the likely recovery period of one to two months.

Neymar’s latest setback continues a difficult period in terms of his fitness. He reached the World Cup in less than ideal physical condition and was unable to play in Brazil’s opening match, eventually making his first appearance only in the third round.

At the age of 34, Neymar has already ended his career with the Brazil national team. His focus is now on returning to action with Santos, although the latest injury means he faces another extended spell away from competitive football.

For Santos, his absence is particularly damaging because of the club’s precarious league position. Neymar remains one of the team’s most prominent players, but he will now be unavailable as they attempt to create distance between themselves and the relegation zone.

The club will have to manage the next stage of the campaign without him while he completes his rehabilitation from the right-thigh injury. A return could come in four weeks if his recovery progresses at the quicker end of the estimate, but Santos’ medical announcement means the potential lay-off could stretch to eight weeks.

The injury occurred in the Copa do Brasil meeting with Palmeiras and has now been confirmed as another significant interruption to Neymar’s season. Santos will hope that the forward can recover fully before returning, but his absence leaves the club facing an immediate challenge both in the league and in its efforts to remain clear of danger.
