Paris Saint-Germain intend to continue negotiations with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia over a new contract despite the Georgia winger suffering a cruciate ligament injury, according to Radio Monte Carlo.
Kvaratskhelia, 25, was injured during Paris Saint-Germain’s 4-2 victory over Barcelona on Tuesday. He had been in talks with the club about extending his deal before sustaining the injury.
The setback has not altered the club’s plans for the player’s future. Kvaratskhelia is currently under contract with Paris Saint-Germain until 2029, but the French club want to extend that agreement until 2032.
The proposed longer contract reflects Paris Saint-Germain’s belief in Kvaratskhelia’s ability and their desire to retain him for the long term. The club also plan to place him among their highest-paid players, despite the injury potentially keeping him out for an extended period.
Kvaratskhelia, who has been nominated for the Ballon d’Or this season, is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days. He is then expected to miss the remainder of the campaign.
The Georgia international was one of the key players who helped Paris Saint-Germain successfully defend their Champions League title last season.
Paris Saint-Germain are aiming to win the European competition for a third consecutive time, but may have to complete the rest of the current season without Kvaratskhelia.
