Carlos Queiroz set to remain Ghana coach as new deal nears

Carlos Queiroz is set to continue as head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars, with the Portuguese coach reportedly close to reaching an agreement on a new contract with the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The 73-year-old took charge of Ghana on a short-term deal in April following the dismissal of Otto Addo and guided the Black Stars to the knockout stage of the 2026 Fifa World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Queiroz’s future had been uncertain after his initial four-month contract expired, but negotiations over an extension have made significant progress in recent weeks.

A major stumbling block was removed after the GFA settled outstanding payments owed to Queiroz and members of his technical team for their work during Ghana’s World Cup campaign.

The outstanding financial obligations were reportedly cleared with assistance from the Ministry of Sports, paving the way for negotiations over a longer-term agreement to resume.

Talks are now understood to be at an advanced stage, with Queiroz expected to sign a new contract once the remaining details are finalised.

The experienced coach strengthened his case for staying in the role after helping Ghana reach the World Cup knockout phase despite having limited time to prepare the team.

Under the proposed new agreement, Queiroz would oversee the Black Stars’ campaign to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana’s qualifying campaign is due to begin on 24 September, when the Black Stars travel to Bouaké to face Ivory Coast at the Stade de la Paix.

They will then return home three days later to play The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana missed out on the previous Africa Cup of Nations after failing to qualify for the tournament in Morocco, increasing the pressure on the Black Stars to secure a place at the 2027 finals.

With negotiations between Queiroz and the GFA nearing completion, the former Egypt and Colombia coach appears set to be given the opportunity to build on his World Cup campaign and lead Ghana into the next stage of its international programme.
