South Africa move top of T20I tri-series after Pretorius leads Zimbabwe demolition

South Africa moved to the top of the T20I tri-series with a commanding 43-run victory over Zimbabwe, inspired by an explosive innings from Lhuan-dre Pretorius.

The Proteas responded strongly to their opening-day defeat by hosts Namibia, securing two comfortable wins against Zimbabwe to take first place in the tournament standings.

Having chosen to bat first, South Africa made an aggressive start, with Pretorius and Jordan Hermann adding 59 runs during the powerplay.

Hermann was the first wicket to fall, departing for 28 from 25 balls. The left-hander attempted to cut off-spinner Wessly Madhevere but picked out backward point, giving Madhevere the first of his three wickets for 20 runs.

Dewald Brevis joined Pretorius at the crease in impressive form after scoring 75 in each of their two previous meetings. He quickly settled and reached 41 from 27 deliveries, continuing the run of substantial scores that had made him one of the key figures in the series.

The partnership between Brevis and Pretorius produced 86 runs for the second wicket and appeared to have placed South Africa on course to become the first team in the tournament to score more than 200.

Zimbabwe seamer Brad Evans eventually ended the stand by dismissing Brevis, finishing with two wickets for 33 runs. South Africa then lost momentum, surrendering six wickets for 31 runs, and were restricted to 185-7 from their innings.

Despite the late collapse, Pretorius’ contribution had given the Proteas a strong total to defend and Zimbabwe’s reply quickly fell apart.

Zimbabwe slipped to 54-7, with spinner Fortuin leading the South African attack during the collapse by taking four wickets for 24 runs. Tall fast bowler Duan Jansen also continued his encouraging form, claiming three wickets for 21.

Captain Sikandar Raza provided the main resistance for Zimbabwe with 45, but his efforts were not enough to revive the chase. A series of lower-order boundaries from Newman Nyamhuri, who made 27, helped Zimbabwe reach 142 before they were bowled out.

The result gives South Africa further momentum after their disappointing loss to Namibia at the start of the competition. Their two victories over Zimbabwe have now taken them to the summit of the tri-series.

The next match will be played on Thursday, when hosts Namibia face Zimbabwe in a crucial fixture in Windhoek.
