Ben Stokes becomes Big Bash League’s most expensive signing with Adelaide Strikers

Ben Stokes is set to become the most expensive signing in Big Bash League history after joining Adelaide Strikers for BBL|16 in a deal reportedly worth about AU$500,000.

The England all-rounder retired from international cricket in June, and his arrival is being viewed as a major coup for the Strikers ahead of the new campaign. No official financial details have been released, but Australian broadcaster 7News reported that Stokes’ contract is in the region of AU$500,000.

That figure is understood to be significantly higher than the previous top payment available under the BBL’s platinum salary band. The agreement makes Stokes the competition’s highest-profile and most expensive recruit, although the exact terms of his contract have not been disclosed.

Stokes said he was looking forward to returning to Australia and taking up the opportunity to represent Adelaide Strikers.

“I’m really excited to be joining the Adelaide Strikers for BBL|16,” Stokes said in a statement. “I’ve always enjoyed playing in Australia, and when the opportunity came up to join the Strikers it was one I couldn’t pass up.

“Adelaide Oval is an incredible place to play cricket, the Big Bash is a fantastic competition and the Strikers have an exciting group, so I’m looking forward to meeting the players, getting stuck in and contributing to a successful season.

“I can’t wait to get started, create some special memories with the group and give Strikers fans plenty to cheer about.”

The signing gives Adelaide a player with extensive experience in major domestic Twenty20 competitions, as well as a reputation for performing in high-pressure situations. Stokes has previously represented three teams in the Indian Premier League, with his most recent appearance in that competition coming for Chennai Super Kings in 2023.

His latest T20 match came in August 2024, when he played for Northern Superchargers in The Hundred. His move to the Strikers therefore represents a return to the shorter format after that appearance.

Adelaide Strikers head coach Tim Paine welcomed the addition of the experienced all-rounder and highlighted his record as a match-winner.

“Ben is one of the greatest all-rounders the game has seen, a proven match-winner and a competitor who thrives under pressure. We’re thrilled to have a player of his ability join our squad and can’t wait to see him put on a show in BBL|16.”
