FC Twente stand firm as Barcelona’s deadline-day move for Rod Nystad fails

Barcelona were unable to complete a late move for FC Twente defender Rod Nystad after the Dutch club rejected the Catalan side’s final attempt to sign the 18-year-old on the last day of the summer transfer window.

The Spanish club had been working for several days on a deal for Nystad, who plays as a centre-back for FC Twente. However, its efforts ended without an agreement after the Dutch club made clear it was not prepared to release one of its most promising young players.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona initially proposed a fee of €8m for Nystad. That offer was rejected by FC Twente, but Barcelona continued to pursue the defender and returned with a final approach on the closing day of the transfer window.

That last attempt also failed. Sources at Barcelona said the deal was abandoned because of FC Twente’s position, bringing an end to the club’s hopes of adding Nystad to its squad before the summer market closed.

Nystad’s physical and technical qualities were understood to be central to Barcelona’s interest. The 18-year-old stands 1.95m tall and is regarded as a defender who is comfortable distributing the ball. He is also considered to possess significant attacking potential, qualities that had made him an attractive target for the Spanish club.

FC Twente value Nystad highly and believe he could command a fee of more than €10m. Some Dutch media reports have gone further, suggesting the club could seek about €50m if the defender is eventually sold to a Premier League side.

That figure would represent an ambitious valuation, particularly for a player who is still 18, but it reflects FC Twente’s determination to retain a player it considers to have considerable future value.

Barcelona’s interest therefore ended with no agreement, despite the club’s willingness to make a final approach before the transfer window closed. The attempt to strengthen the defence with a young prospect from the Netherlands became the club’s last unsuccessful piece of business in the summer market.

The move also underlined the difference between Barcelona’s intentions and FC Twente’s assessment of Nystad’s importance. While Barcelona sought to secure the centre-back before the deadline, the Dutch club refused to change its stance and kept the player at the club.

With the summer transfer window now closed, Nystad remains an FC Twente player. Barcelona’s efforts to sign him, including the rejected €8m opening offer and the late final approach, have not resulted in a deal.
