Cedric Kaze set to leave Sekhukhune United before TS Galaxy match

Sekhukhune United are set to appoint Papi Zothwane as interim head coach for their league meeting with TS Galaxy after agreeing to part company with Cedric Kaze.

Kaze’s departure is expected to be confirmed through a mutual agreement, bringing his time at the club to an end just seven matches into the 2026/27 season. The Burundian coach had signed a one-year contract with Sekhukhune United.

The former Kaizer Chiefs co-coach and the club’s management reached the decision after a series of internal disagreements about the future direction of the technical team and the current playing squad.

Kaze leaves with three victories and four defeats from his seven matches in charge. His losses included a defeat by Kaizer Chiefs and three successive setbacks against Orlando Pirates, with two of those coming in the MTN8 semi-final.

Assistant coach Paulus Masehe oversaw Sekhukhune United’s match on Saturday in Kaze’s absence. Kaze was serving a suspension after being sent off during the league defeat by Orlando Pirates the previous week.

Zothwane will now be tasked with preparing Babina Noko for their next league fixture against TS Galaxy, while the club searches for a more permanent solution in the dugout.

The change would represent Sekhukhune United’s ninth coaching switch since their promotion to South Africa’s top flight in 2021. McDonald Makhubedu was in charge during the club’s promotion-winning campaign and remains involved as Sporting Director.

Since then, Kaitano Tembo, Brandon Truter, Lehlohonolo Seema on two separate occasions, Peter Hyballa, Eric Tinkler and Kaze have all led the team.

Despite the frequent changes in the technical area, Sekhukhune United have established themselves as regular occupants of the upper half of the Betway Premiership.

The club’s immediate priority will be to stabilise the team following the latest coaching development and recover from a difficult run against Orlando Pirates. Zothwane’s temporary appointment comes at a key point in the campaign, with the fixture against TS Galaxy providing the side with an opportunity to respond on the pitch.
